A UV system can look like it is working even after its lamp has stopped delivering effective disinfection. The lamp may still glow, the controller may still be powered, and water may still flow normally. For most residential water treatment systems, the answer is simple: replace the UV lamp every 12 months. When to Replace a UV Lamp: The Annual Rule

Most lamps are rated for roughly 9,000 operating hours, which equals about one year of continuous use. UV water systems are designed to run 24 hours a day, so a lamp installed in January is generally due for replacement the following January. Mark the installation date on the controller, system housing, or maintenance calendar when the new lamp is installed.
Some systems include a countdown timer, display message, audible alarm, or status light to signal that lamp life has expired. Why a Glowing Lamp Is Not Proof of Protection

The UV lamp and quartz sleeve do different jobs. The lamp creates UV-C light, while the sleeve protects the lamp from water and allows that light to pass into the treatment chamber. A clean, clear sleeve is essential to system performance.
During an annual lamp replacement, remove and inspect the sleeve. Mineral scale, staining, cloudy film, scratches, or etching can reduce UV transmission. Mild deposits can often be cleaned using a manufacturer-approved method. If the sleeve remains cloudy after cleaning, is deeply scratched, cracked, or has damaged ends, replace it.
It is also wise to keep a spare sleeve on hand for seasonal properties or remote locations. A broken sleeve can take a UV system out of service until the correct part arrives, and sleeves are specific to the system model.
